I have always been artistic, as far back as I can remember. This talent emerged during my time in elementary school, where I became the go-to person whenever classmates needed help drawing or creating something for an art project. Who would have thought that young boy would grow up to turn his talent into a business? Even though it was never my dream to become a graphic designer or pursue anything within the realm of art, the skill for crafting ideas never left me.
Honestly, life’s struggles can either make you or break you; sometimes, both effects happen simultaneously. One thing I was not proud of at the time was my inability to offer financial assistance to my immediate family when they needed it. This frustration grew to the point that I decided I would no longer waste time sitting on my talent without doing anything about it.
In 2014, life took a full 360-degree turn, bringing me back to something I loved and enjoyed after neglecting it for over 20 years. Since it was never my day job, I initially saw it as a hobby while I honed my newfound skills. However, as my passion for it grew, by 2017, I saw it as a way to make some money on the side. With a growing family, I started thinking about my future, which sparked the fire to rekindle my long-lost skill: art.
Throughout these years, the skills and knowledge I have developed now play a key role in my day-to-day processes. The methods I started with are no longer the ones I use, as I have adapted new styles and techniques. Although I have never seen some of the techniques I use portrayed in any of the numerous YouTube videos I have watched, I consider this uniqueness something special. I’m not saying that nobody is doing similar things, but I haven’t seen it being done in quite the same way. Once the Almighty gives me strength, I plan on teaching some of these skills to my children so they can either adapt or modify them to craft their own techniques.
With this enlightenment, I realized my daughters are now following in my footsteps, displaying a knack for art through their creative works and drawings. This trait has been handed down from generation to generation since both my father and mother had the same creative genes. I often recall how my dad built a whole shack out of bamboo. He lived in the hills, embracing the Rastafarian faith in the latter part of his life. My mom, on the other hand, used to do tie and dye, knitting, and sewing, among other crafts. Creativity was in my blood.
With this bit of information, I always told myself that, unlike my father, I would think about future generations. I was determined not to make the same mistake. Thus, I have provided fertile ground for the planting of seeds that are now growing. I am building a name and a brand that could live on through my children if they choose to follow that path.
